A novel AI study reveals evolutionary differences between male and female birdwing butterflies, revisiting the debate between Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.
By analyzing over 16,000 specimens, researchers used machine learning to uncover patterns in butterfly evolution.

Males showed more variation, supporting Darwin's sexual selection theory.
Subtle variations in females align with Wallace's natural selection theory.
A machine learning model studied 16,734 butterfly images over 2990 epochs to examine species groups and sexes. For Ornithoptera paradisea, females are grouped together and males are spread out (females' clade depth 0.32, males 0.53). For Troides haliphron, males are grouped together and females are spread out (females' clade depth 1.0, males 0.31). The images show top and bottom views of both male and female butterflies.
The findings show that both sexes contribute to species diversity.
Males often show more variation, while females have more subtle changes.
This study demonstrates how both sexual and natural selection drive biodiversity.
