EU Charges Meta: Is Big Tech at Risk?

The EU charged Meta for breaking tech rules with its pay-or-consent ad model.

Users must accept tracking for free services or pay for no ads, which the EU says is unfair.

Meta disagrees and plans to talk with the Commission to resolve this.

AI Settles the Score on Evolution: Darwin vs. Wallace

A novel AI study reveals evolutionary differences between male and female birdwing butterflies, revisiting the debate between Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace.

By analyzing over 16,000 specimens, researchers used machine learning to uncover patterns in butterfly evolution.

What you need to know:

  • AI analyzed over 16,000 birdwing butterflies for evolutionary patterns.

  • Males showed more variation, supporting Darwin's sexual selection theory.

  • Subtle variations in females align with Wallace's natural selection theory.

A machine learning model studied 16,734 butterfly images over 2990 epochs to examine species groups and sexes. For Ornithoptera paradisea, females are grouped together and males are spread out (females' clade depth 0.32, males 0.53). For Troides haliphron, males are grouped together and females are spread out (females' clade depth 1.0, males 0.31). The images show top and bottom views of both male and female butterflies.

The findings show that both sexes contribute to species diversity.

Males often show more variation, while females have more subtle changes.

This study demonstrates how both sexual and natural selection drive biodiversity.

META AI UPDATE

Meta's New 'AI Info' Label: What You Need to Know

Credits: Meta

Meta changed the 'Made with AI' label to 'AI Info' on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads after photographers complained.

The old label wrongly marked edited real photos as AI-made.

The new label explains that images might be modified, not fully AI-generated.

This change came after complaints, including one from ex-White House photographer Pete Souza.

ANTHROPIC

Anthropic Funds New AI Benchmarks

Credits: Anthropic

Anthropic is funding new AI benchmarks to better evaluate AI models like its Claude.

The program invites applications to create tools assessing AI's security and societal impact.

The goal is to support AI safety, research, and reducing biases.

Key Points to Note:

  1. Funding third-party AI evaluations

  2. Focus on safety and advanced capabilities

  3. Priorities include cybersecurity, chemical threats, and social manipulation

  4. Support for creating robust, comprehensive evaluation tools

  5. Aim to improve AI risk assessment and capabilities
