The 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper for using AI to solve a major science problem: predicting protein structures.
Their work with AlphaFold, an AI tool, helped map out the shapes of almost all 200 million known proteins, a task that was unsolved for 50 years.
This breakthrough is expected to boost research in medicine, biology, and drug development.
AlphaFold, created by Hassabis and Jumper at Google DeepMind, works like a "Google search" for protein structures, making this data easily available to scientists worldwide.
The tool has sped up progress in understanding diseases, designing new treatments, and even creating new types of proteins.
