Meta is broadening the use of its Horizon OS, originally for Quest headsets, to include devices from Asus, Lenovo, and an Xbox variant.

This move allows other manufacturers to create VR devices that work with Meta's platform, aiming to strengthen Meta's role in the VR-AR competition.

Future VR headsets will connect through the existing Meta Quest app.

Updates are coming to make the App Lab more accessible and develop an open framework for better AR experiences.

ROBOTS

2024 The Year Robotics: Faster Learning and Lower Costs

Sanctuary AI, a Canadian company, recently released the seventh version of its Phoenix humanoid robot. This robot can mimic human movements and learn new tasks in less than a day. The latest model is designed to perform more efficiently and at a lower cost, marking a significant advancement in robotics aimed at achieving artificial general intelligence.

DeepMind's Latest Breakthrough: More Power, Less Memory

Google DeepMind's new RecurrentGemma model, using the Griffin architecture, performs as well as or better than older transformer models while using less memory.

This makes it efficient for devices with limited resources like laptops and phones.

It's trained with fewer data but manages to keep its high performance even with long text, unlike traditional models which slow down as they handle more data.

Key Highlights:

  • Uses less memory: So perfect for portable devices, like phones.

  • High performance: Works as well as or better than older models.

  • Fast processing: Keeps up speed, even with long texts.
